With John Quirk
Beginning with stop-motion and essentials of animated movement, then moving onto compositing, editing and sound design, the course is structured as a series of exercises through which one can explore themselves and their ideas through animated storytelling and abstract expression. -Sessions 1-3 establish familiarity with principles of motion and a variety of techniques and approaches to animation. -Sessions 4-6 are for developing, shooting and editing a short film, either collaboratively or independently. -Session 7 is a screening of all that we've made together, with critique/ discussion/ debriefing.

- What should I bring?
- Participants can be absolutely new to animation. Stop Motion Studio, a free app on IOS & Android, on a tablet or smartphone, as well as Davinci Resolve, a free program for Mac & PC, would be useful to the course. For the initial exercises, all materials are provided, but if the participant has other materials they would like to include in their larger project, they are free to bring them along.
About the artist
John Quirk is a North American artist, filmmaker, and teacher currently living in Berlin. His work plays with humor, texture, nonsense, multimedia, and banality. Quirk has been teaching technical approaches to 2-D, stop-motion & multimedia animation as well as narrative development and creative practice for nearly 14 years, between Massachusetts College of Art & Design, the Estonian Academy of Art, Harvard University, Lesley University, and more. Quirk is currently developing an abstract animated short film based on his experiences with epilepsy.
