Neriage: when the pattern runs through the clay

Neriage is a two-part ceramics workshop exploring a beautiful technique in which clays of different colours are joined together to create patterns that run right through the body of each piece. There is no coloured glaze and no painted decoration, the design lives in the clay itself, visible inside and out. The first session is devoted to assembling the clays. Participants learn to marry two contrasting-coloured clays, stacking, folding, rolling and pressing them to build blocks with deliberate patterns such as checkerboards, spirals and veins. Much like preparing a layered pastry, the work is guided by what the cut will eventually reveal. The second session brings those patterns into form. We slice, roll out and build the assembled clays into real objects: dishes, bowls, vases and small vessels. The pattern is revealed at the moment of cutting, always with an element of surprise, and participants learn to join the slices cleanly so the design stays crisp. After firing, every piece can be finished with a clear transparent glaze, handled by the teacher.

- What should I bring?
- Nothing to bring. Just confortable clothes that you are not afraid to stain (clay will leave easy after washing machine). Optional but lovely: If you have a Stanley knife it would help a lot. No experience needed, I'll guide each person individually depending on their level.
About the artist
Cassandre is the maker behind Casstle of Clay, a name that playfully fuses her own with her chosen medium. Her bond with ceramics began at six and ran deep through her teenage years, leading to an early honour: in 2003, her sculptures were exhibited in photographs at the Musée du Louvre, in collaboration with the Musée du Quai Branly. Life drew her elsewhere for a time, but the pull of clay proved impossible to abandon. In 2024 she returned to her roots. Today she creates original work shaped by her journey and shares ceramics' transformative power through creative, meaningful classes.

We use a sliding scale to make courses as affordable as possible. Here’s how to use it: Lower end: You don’t have a stable income. Mid range: You have a less stable financial situation and are more selective about where you spend your money. Higher end: You experience relative financial stability.
