Knotting Our Tongues Together for Tomorrow

Many of us are frustrated with language. We struggle to find the right words to describe what we witness and what we want to express. Increasingly, we live under systems that are attempting to control what we do online and offline, including the words and languages we use. Instead of staying stuck, our workshop invites participants to imagine together how we can still find agency in the language(s) of tomorrow. During this workshop, we want to explore together how we can imagine a future where languages keep subversive potential; where languages are less organised in hierarchies, but valorised for their differences; where even not-understanding a language can be something enriching, instead of threatening. For this, we start by mapping the languages that have shaped us and are present in our lives, sharing language biographies and stories of language confusion and language loss. We are going to look for the gaps of missing words in our lives, guiding workshop participants to collectively create new terms and sounds. Each day will have a different focus for how we apply new language inventions: from creating small theatre scenes to new chants and songs, from writing signs or banners for protest or working on a shared glossary.

About the artist
Salma Said (Cairo/Berlin) and Miriam Coretta Schulte (Berlin/Basel/Cairo) are artists and researchers working at the intersection of performance, political imagination, and collective practice. Their artistic practice builds on participation from the audience during the creation process as well as in the performance stage. Their collaboration explores theatre as a space for world-making, where audiences are invited to rehearse futures and unpack archives. Their joint works include “Behind Your Eyeballs” (2021) and “Court Fantasies” (2023), as well as the workshop series “Imaginative Justice”. For "Knotting our tongues together for tomorrow”, they collaborated with musician Shadi El-Hosseiny.
