Intro to Queering Film + DIY Cinema

Queer cinema can be a form of resistance, but how? What defines queer cinema? How can we use the tools available to us to create films and express ourselves in this form of media? In this course, I’ll teach you some tips for harnessing the tools at your disposal and start making DIY cinema! This is not a scriptwriting class, but moreso a taster course of all the scrumptious technical parts of filmmaking - and a little bit of cinema theory discussion too :) You’ll learn about basic framing, lighting, composition and editing techniques. We’ll also discuss ways to “queer” typical film conventions. After the course, you’ll have some starting techniques to continue with DIY filmmaking in the future. It’s amazing the stories that can be told with just your phone, a bike light and a piece of Bristol board. I’ll work to create a loose and comfortable space for discussing films, especially through the lens of queer cinema; and honing foundational skills via playing with some practical exercises.

- This course is geared towards LGBTQIA+ film beginners/movie lovers who are looking to start playing around with film, but have no idea where to start. Anyone is welcome who has a curiosity and interest in DIY + starter film techniques :)

About the artist
Katrina Singleton (she/her) is a filmmaker originally from Scarborough, Canada and now based in Berlin. Specializing in intimate and colourful portraits, her work spans from short documentaries to editorial photoshoots and music videos. Her main focus is highlighting and telling narratives of underrepresented and marginalized communities, particularly those from the Afrodescendant and Caribbean diaspora. Katrina’s film works have been screened at Kantine am Berghain, the Montreal World Film Festival and Piccadilly Circus. Her most recent short film, “House Of Living Colors,” follows the beginnings of one of Berlin’s first all-BIPOC drag performance house as they prepare for their stage debut.
