Free Music Improvisation as a Collective

With Jo Rinaldo Heffernan, Marianthie Makropoulou

Free Music Improvisation as a Collective

This is a Music Improvisation course designed to make contemporary improvisation accessible to everyone. There is no need for prior knowledge. The sessions will be a nurturing and guided approach to modern improvisation practices within the context of a group. By facilitating this workshop, we aim to strengthen the bonds of the music community by creating and performing original material and existing works of music, with a focus on deep listening and musical dialogue. By encouraging freedom of interpretation and expression, the workshop will be a journey of creativity and connection. We will be working in small groups and larger groups, making original scores, within the context of an ongoing musical dialogue. Together, we will explore the possibilities in the interpretation of graphic scores, call-and-response structures, and active listening practices. Feedback and proposals of original ideas for new pieces or methods of collective improvisation is integral to democratizing the process of music creation. This workshop is a practice-based learning experience, where navigating music performance as a collective is our primary focus. The end result will be a final live performance based on structures and free improv developed in the workshop.
