An intensive, hands on introduction to documentary filmmaking for emerging filmmakers, artists and storytellers. Over six weeks, participants conceive, shoot and edit a short documentary under the guidance of an experienced filmmaker. The course combines practical training with creative exploration. Participants develop core skills in storytelling, camera and sound, interviewing, observational filming and editing, while shaping a personal voice and ethical approach to working with real people. Guest workshop leaders contribute industry insight and real world perspective throughout the programme. Built around learning by doing, each participant creates their own film while working within a supportive cohort that reflects the collaborative realities of documentary production. Sessions include screenings, discussion, practical exercises and group critique. By the end of the course, every participant completes a short documentary about a SINGLE HUMAN CHARACTER under five minutes and leaves with the confidence and foundation to continue making work independently. - The workshop is aimed at adults with an interest in documentary filmmaking, visual storytelling, or working creatively with reality. It is well suited to artists, writers, activists, and creatives from other disciplines who wish to explore documentary as a medium. The course welcomes participants from diverse backgrounds and does not require formal training or industry experience. It is designed for those who are curious, reflective, and open to engaging ethically with real people and lived experience, and who are interested in developing a personal documentary voice.
- What should I bring?
- Ideally bring one or more ideas for a 'single character' short documentary. No prior knowledge or filmmaking experience is required. The workshop is designed for beginners as well as those with some creative experience in other fields. Participants should bring a curiosity about documentary storytelling, a willingness to engage with real people and situations, and an openness to group discussion and feedback. A smartphone or basic camera is sufficient for filming and participants are encouraged to use equipment they already have access to. Headphones and a personal laptop suitable for basic video editing are recommended - guidance will be provided. More important than technical skill is a commitment to the process and respect for the shared learning environment.
About the artist
Oliver is a Berlin based filmmaker, cinematographer and educator working at the intersection of documentary, experimental film and multimedia performance. His work explores myth, identity and creative exile through poetic and immersive storytelling. He blends observational intimacy with cinematic textures and long term collaboration, often addressing social justice, migration and marginalised voices. His background includes documentary work for Channel 4, BBC, The Guardian and the United Nations. He lived and worked on the island of Lesvos during the refugee crisis, producing work focused on identity and the movement of people. He holds First Class Honours in Time Based Media and an MA in Media Screenwriting.
